Policeman laughs after fatal accident

Jaahnavi Kandula was hit and killed by a police officer on Jan. 23 in Seattle, Washington.

According to NDTV World, Kevin Dave, a Seattle Police officer, crashed into Jaahnavi Kandula when he was on his way to respond to an overdose call. As stated by The Seattle Times, he drove 74 mph at Thomas Street. In the report of  The Times of India, the vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild (SPOG), Daniel Auderer, laughed and made comments about the young woman’s death from Bodycam footage.

Bodycam footage that many people have called disturbing was released on Sept. 11. In the body cam footage, Auderer can be heard laughing before he said, “No, it’s a regular person,” and continued to say “$11,000. She was 26 anyway, she had limited value,” according to The Times of India. People have been outraged by Auderer’s comments. According to Hindustan Times, Kandula was from Andhra Pradesh, India and came to the U.S. to earn her master degree from Northeastern University.

The Minister of IT of Telangana, K T Rama Rao tweeted on Thursday,”I request the U.S. Ambassador in India Eric Garcetti and External Affair Minister S Jaishankar to take up the matter with US Government authorities and deliver justice to the family of young Jaahnavi Kandula.”. The Minister requested for the U.S. ambassador to confer with the US government authorities to take action.

The Consulate General of India in San Francisco tweeted, “Recent reports including in media of the handling of Ms Jaahnavi Kandula’s death in a road accident in Seattle in January are deeply troubling.” He tweeted about the 23-year-old’s death on Sept. 13.
