The landscape of College Baseball changed forever on Monday May, 4.
The newly debuted Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) started to make its way into amateur sports.
The NCAA has approved the Southeastern Conference (SEC)’s request to implement the ABS system for the 2026 SEC tournament. This will bring a change to the sport as a whole, with many other conferences set to follow along.
After being tested in the Minor Leagues for a few years, ABS finally made its long-awaited Major League Debut in the 2025 MLB All-Star game, where it was a success. This brought much needed excitement to the game for fans and a change that was much needed.
ABS created opportunities for batters and pitchers to challenge the calls made by an umpire behind the plate, using an automated ball tracking system. This system shows exactly where the ball ends up, in relation to the batter’s strike zone.
In MLB, players get two challenges per game, and if a challenge is successful, they retain that challenge. In the SEC Tournament though, teams will be given three challenges while they keep similar rules to Major League Baseball.
Major League Baseball has seen a rise in accurate calls over this past season, and the data follows.
This is something that fans have wanted for a long time. With the recent failures of calls made by umpires, fans have called for a change. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey spoke out about the change, which he believes will elevate the game positively.
“This addition represents a continued step forward for our game, aligns more closely with the professional level and supports the development of our student-athletes as they prepare for success at the next level,” Sankey said, according to the Associated Press.
The hope for this change will bring College Baseball to a new peak, with viewership numbers that have increased over the years. The NCAA has created an attempt to keep it that way by making the game more similar to the professional level.
The SEC Tournament will be played from May 19-24 in Hoover, Alabama, where they will debut the ABS system for the first time. Other conferences will be allowed to follow along if they follow the rules set in place by the SEC.
A positive change could be seen by America’s Pastime sooner, rather than later.
