To start this 2026 season, the Cleveland Guardians are an astounding 15-15 and are half a game out of the American League(AL) Central despite previous odds to finish 4th place.
Rookie Pitcher Parker Messick has led the Guardians in every statistical category except for strikeouts, which belong to Big Rig, AKA Gavin Williams. Messick and Williams lead the Guardians’ starting rotation, both having sub-2.12 Earned Run Average(ERA). On April 16th, Parker Messick took a no-hitter into the 9th inning.
Against the Orioles, Messick went eight innings, allowed only two hits, allowed two earned runs, and had only two walks. Messick also had nine strikeouts in a 4-2 Guardians win. Another rookie having a stellar start to his season is outfielder Chase Delauter. Delauter is batting .235 with five Home Runs(HR) and 16 Runs Batted In(RBIs). In the first couple of series, Delauter started on a tear.
In his Major League debut, Delauter hit a home run in his very first at-bat, and another in his last, becoming the first player in Cleveland Guardians history to hit multiple home runs in his regular-season debut.
Cleveland’s average age is 27.95; they rank as the 3rd youngest team in the MLB.
They have consistently been one of the youngest teams in the league for years now, but they let that stop them from winning two straight AL Central titles.
Back-to-back AL manager of the year Stephen Vogt has continued to impress in his first two seasons as manager. He has gotten this Guardians squad through a tough early-season schedule and has come out with a winning record at the end of it.
In the division, the Detroit Tigers, as expected, have come back from their disappointing start to the year, and have now led the Guardians atop the AL Central at 15-14. The Guardians need to watch out for the Tigers as they have won back-to-back earlier this month and are led by back-to-back AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal. The Tigers are a team the Guardians need to look out for.
In the last series against the Blue Jays, Angel Martinez hit two home runs in the first game and went 2-5 in the last game. He has been very important in the Guardians’ start to the season and will continue to be over the course of a long MLB season.
Martinez offers versatility that other players cannot. He has played every outfield position and second base so far this season, and he has played great defense wherever he plays.
Another player who has started this season great has been utility man Daniel Schneemann. Schneemann is batting .318 with 12 RBIs and an On Base plus Slugging(OPS) of .961. Through the Blue Jays series, Schneemann has carried a 12-game on-base streak, an impressive feat for a mostly unknown player around the league.
The Guardians have had a very impressive start for the schedule they have, but with the Tigers on their tail, they need to continue to win series to hold their short lead in the AL Central.
