Miami Beach set a curfew on Sunday, March 19 due to fatal shootings that have occurred during the spring break weeks.

According to AP News, a press release was sent out to inform the public that the curfew would be put in place on Sunday night. An additional curfew is set to be put in place on Thursday and will not end until March 27. Mayor Dan Gelber made a statement on the matter, according to AP News.

“We don’t ask for spring break in our city. We don’t want spring break in our city. It’s too rowdy, it’s too much disorder, and it’s too difficult to police,” Gelber said.

According to CNN, violence “broke out” on Friday, March 16 during Saint Patrick’s Day festivities. Four firearms were found on the scene and the shooting left one person dead and another injured. Another person was fatally shot on early Sunday morning as well. This has not been the first time Miami Beach has had to enforce a spring break curfew- a curfew was enforced last year due to two other fatal shootings in the area.

“I’m at my wits end trying to figure out how to be able to deal with this crowd with the numbers that are here and with what we are encountering during the policing of this particular event,” Miami Beach Chief Richard Clements said at the time, according to CNN.

Miami Beach is a very popular spring break destination for college students.  However, the rowdiness and lack of respect for the area has left the police and local residents frustrated with the influx of crowds each spring break season.
