English teacher at Olentangy Berlin High School, Catherine McLellan is passionate about her students and wants them to succeed in future classes.
Around the middle of January, students try to decide which classes to take in the next school year. This can be a struggle, but McLellan is here to help. She believes that a student should not become overly stressed. It’s important to remember that there is a life outside of school, and it’s good to keep a balance. Don’t take classes that will occupy life at home, and remember to be a teenager.
“I caution anyone who is on the side of being so busy that you feel like you’re on a hamster wheel running, running, running, and exhausted,” McLellan said.
Students should take classes that are the best fit for them. There’s a lot of pressure to take honors or AP classes, but it’s important that the students are prepared to take them. McLellan agrees that junior year is a good time to take an AP-level course. Just because a friend takes that class doesn’t mean that the students should too.
“Classes can get competitive,” McLellan said, “If you know you aren’t good at something, don’t take honors or AP.”
Lastly, students should make time to participate in sports and clubs. To be involved at the school is very important. Most kids who are in clubs and sports will make friendships along the way and often look back, are grateful for the experiences they had. Students should do what they love, not what they hate.
“Find the stuff that fills you up,” McLellan said,“Don’t be afraid to say no to things you’re just not into.”
