The curse has been reversed, the Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl LX after a dominating performance from their defense.
After a memorable National Anthem sung by Charlie Puth, the New England Patriots won the coin toss but elected to defer. This led to the Seattle Seahawks receiving the ball first.
On their first possession, Seattle drove right down the field following a Cooper Kupp 23 yard reception to get Seattle on New England’s 17 yard line. Seattle would stall out settling for a Jason Myers 33 yard field goal.
Following the Seahawks’ field goal, New England started with the ball with a promising first drive. They converted for a first down in the early part of the drive, but it was shut down after a Derick Hall sack.
Seattle kept New England’s defense on their heels both drives in the first quarter, but with a missed throw by Sam Darnold to a wide open Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Seattle would ultimately only score three points. New England would do the same, with the first quarter closing in a score of 3-0 in favor of the Seattle Seahawks.
To start the second quarter, Seattle drove down the field which was created by a Kenneth Walker III 30-yard run which would position them on New England’s 46-yard line. New England would generate another stop, leading to a 39-yard Jason Myers field goal.
New England could not seem to get anything going as they stalled out their next two drives. This game was overall a defensive showdown.
Michael Dickson pinned New England inside the 5-yard line, which would lead Seattle to take their first charged timeout with under five minutes to play. Seattle would force a Patriots punt and receive the ball back with just under three minutes left in the Second Quarter.
Heading into halftime, Sam Darnold was blitzed on 65% of his drives, which was beneficial for New England as they only gave up nine points in the first half. The score was 9-0 going into halftime in favor of the Seattle Seahawks.
After Bad Bunny’s halftime performance, the Patriots went three and out. Seattle drove down the field following Walker III’s 30-yard drive, which led to, yet again, another Jason Myers field goal.
The Patriots had not crossed the 50-yard line since the first quarter. They had gone three-and-out in their last six out of seven drives dating to 3:00 left in the third quarter, and haven’t had a first down since the first quarter.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba exited the game in the third quarter where he got banged up on a play, where after he was seen limping off the field. He would reenter the game after being reevaluated and cleared for a concussion.
Drake Maye fumbled with 10 seconds left in the third quarter which sealed Seattle’s victory, as they would go on to score a 11-yard passing touchdown to Tight End AJ Barner.
The Patriots and Mack Hollins would respond the next drive with a 35-yard touchdown. This score would make it 19-7 in favor of Seattle.
Christian Gonzalez was a workhorse, having three pass deflections through the third quarter. Sam Darnold just overthrew Rashid Shaheed on a 3rd & 11 play, which would set up for a Michael Dickson punt where New England would start at the 4-yard line with 10:40 left in the fourth quarter.
Both quarterbacks had accuracy problems, as Drake Maye overthrew a wide open Austin Hooper to get them out of their own endzone.
The struggles for Maye continued as he would throw the first interception of the night, in a costly moment. This game was over as soon as that interception happened as Seattle would run most of the clock down, settling for another Jason Myers field goal, marking his 5th of the night, a Super Bowl record.
With 4:27 left in the Fourth Quarter, time winding down, Maye had another costly turnover; another interception that would lead to a Seattle defensive touchdown.
New England would bounce back, though, with a Rhamondre Stevenson receiving touchdown, but would fail to convert the two point conversion. They would not recover the onside kick either, giving Seattle the ball at the 50-yard line.
New England would get a stop, after a costly holding call on what would have been a 40-yard rushing touchdown for Walker III, but due to the holding, it was called back and the Patriots were able to get a stop.
It did not matter though, as Seattle’s defense continued to show who they are, stopping New England once again, and brought a Super Bowl to Seattle once again.
The Seattle Seahawks would win 29-13 followed by a huge 200 all purpose yard game by Kenneth Walker III. Walker III would end up winning Super Bowl MVP.
Going into the season the Seahawks faced 70-1 odds to win the Super Bowl. A true underdog story for Sam Darnold has reached full circle, a man who went through four stops before ending up in Seattle and winning them their first Super Bowl in over 10 years.
