The 2025-26 NCAA college wrestling dual season is underway, and the meet atmosphere around campuses starts to heat up as teams vie for dual supremacy and fight for supreme position in advance of the championship stretch in March.

   Dual meets, head-to-head team contests where results of each weight class factor into a team score, are the staple of the regular season and are where rivalries and momentum are built. Such as Ohio State vs. Penn State and Iowa (The Hawkeyes) vs. Iowa University (The Cyclones).

   On top of the current NCAA Division I dual rankings, undefeated, No. 1 Penn State sits ahead of No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Iowa State, with beasts such as Iowa, Oklahoma State, and Nebraska filling out the rankings’ top half. Dual teams are built to collect wins, with depth across weight classes generally a good indicator of dual success. In one of the season’s signature results so far this season, Penn State handled No. 4 Iowa 32-3 in a Big Ten dual, further proving their dual acumen and extending the Nittany Lions’ dual win streak.

   Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Rutgers earned its first conference dual of the season in a 24-9 win over Purdue, who are still to build momentum as dual play ramps up. Tournament play in invitationals like the early-season National Duals Invitational can bring top programs together in a bracketed dual format, which allows for nontraditional major team matchups. In January, the multi-division NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) National Dual Meet Championships gave more teams across NCAA divisions a chance to build depth and flexibility in a dual meet scoring showcase. 

   As programs continue conference duals through Jan. and Feb., the stakes continue to heighten, with each match mattering that much more for seeds and belief heading into the Big Ten, ACC, and national championships. At the highest level, dual championships remain up for grabs as rhetoric and rankings.

   As February approaches, major duals hang overhead of several of the top teams, including Penn State vs. Ohio State and Iowa vs. Oklahoma State. With rankings, rivalries, and postseason seeding at stake, these matchups promise defining moments and postseason-shaped intensity.
