Shedeur Sanders is the son of star baseball and football player Deion Sanders. Deion coached Shedeur every year from the start of high school until his end of college.
After being drafted by the Browns, he was the fourth quarterback (QB) on the depth chart behind Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel.
The depth chart is the roster of the team sorted by position and order of string (starter, backup, 3rd string). Shedeur battled in the preseason to get a depth chart spot. The Browns traded Kenny Pickett to the Raiders for a 2026 fifth-round pick. Joe Flacco started the first four games, going 1-3, then Dillon Gabriel started the next six games.
Gabriel was 1-5, losing to the Vikings, Steelers, Patriots, Ravens, and Jets. In the one game that Gabriel won against the Dolphins, he only had 116 passing yards and no touchdowns. In the middle of the Ravens game, Gabriel came out of the game with a concussion.
It was perfect timing. Shedeur Sanders stepped in and went 4/16 with an interception. Not the best start, but the next week, against the Raiders, Sanders started his first game.
Shedeur stepped into the game, confident and grateful for his time to shine against the Las Vegas Raiders. When interviewed before the game,
“We cool, calm, and collected. This ain’t nothing to us,” Sanders said.
Sanders proved that statement when he picked up the third win of the season and went 11/20 with 206 yards, one touchdown, and an interception.
He was the first Browns quarterback to win their starting debut in the 21st century. Shedeur had a 52-yard throw in the first quarter to Isaiah Bond that shocked many. This set up the second Quinshon Judkins touchdown of the day. Even star defensive end Myles Garrett, who is on pace to break the season record for sacks this year, was hyped up after the spectacular play from Sanders to Bond.
“I’m just like, wow, there’s not many guys in the league that can make that throw. So, that was a [heck] of a throw. I hope he can continue to grow and develop, you know, making plays like that, and they’ll take it from there.” Garrett said.
Since then, Shedeur has lost 2 games, to the 49ers and the Titans. He threw for 364 yards, had four total touchdowns, and an interception against the Titans. Sanders is looking like the Browns’ franchise quarterback, even if it was just against the Titans. It was his third start ever.
