Berlin’s own Ocean Henthorn ‘23 commits to cheer at The Ohio State University to further both her academic and athletic career; Henthorn will join the team for the 2023-2024 season.
Henthorn has worked towards her goal to cheer in college ever since she was young. This process has caused both stress and excitement for Henthorn. She traveled to many different colleges whilst she stayed committed to her school work and other extracurriculars.
“The recruitment process for cheer is a lot different than other sports, you really have to focus on communicating with the coaches and you have to go to them,” Henthorn said.
Throughout her experience, Henthorn stayed both committed and dedicated. She learned how to market herself and get her name out there.
“You really have to travel, show your face, and a lot of it is about marketing yourself,” Henthorn said.
The treatment athletes receive, the stability of a job or higher education after you earn a degree, and the overall atmosphere drew Henthorn to the university. Prior to her commitment, Henthorn visited two other universities with cheer teams that both placed in the top five at UCA Nationals but ultimately decided that The Ohio State University is the best fit for her.
“They are incredible programs but just the game day atmosphere, there is nothing compared to Ohio State,” Henthorn said.
Henthorn never let herself question whether she would succeed. She believes that if you have any doubt that you might not succeed that you will be more likely to. She advises people to have the same mindset.
“My biggest piece of advice for anyone is to make the decision that you are going to succeed before you even start,” Henthorn said.
Henthorn can not wait to start this new experience and cheer on the buckeyes.
“Gameday in the shoe baby, let’s go!” Henthorn said.
