Homework should be optional. Homework is designed to help you, but at times, it can just become busywork. When different homework from every class piles up, it becomes hard to complete. Family time is restricted and students with sports lose sleep completing their homework.
Homework should be just for the student to do if they have time and the need to review and understand the material done in school that day. It shouldn’t be mandatory, as it adds a burden on students’ shoulders.
Mainly, having homework increases the risk for mental health conditions. According to the Britannica article about homework, students’ stress level tends to increase as homework piles on day by day. They have the fear of their grades going down causing them to have increased stress and anxiety levels.
This leads into the next point, loss of sleep. Sravya Poulry ‘28 stays up late to finish her homework, thus her eyelids left drooping at school the next day. Homework that is given to help make grades better can cause them to get worse due to lack of sleep.
Additionally, sports and extracurriculars could conflict with it too. Some people push back their homework to later in the night, after 8 p.m. or 9 p.m., because they come back from sports late. Especially people who come home on the bus during away matches don’t come home till at least 7:30 p.m.
Students’ home environment could also conflict with doing homework. It is never known what one is going through in their life outside of school.
There are so many ways to take action for this. Homework could be made optional, to only be done if needed. Another solution could be for teachers to communicate with other teachers and not make all of the projects, tests, and homework in general at the same time. When they are spread out, there is a higher chance of learning something rather than just trying to finish it.
