Students today attend school for more than seven hours a day with sports practice and club meetings after school. Students need to have less assigned homework every night.
Students have to go home and have loads of homework every night. Instead of spending time with their friends and having a social life, students are too busy with homework. They are becoming too busy with completing more work and becoming more stressed trying to get their work done.
According to the Stanford Report, high school students spend on average around 3.1 hours of homework each night. By the time students get home from school and attend practice or any extracurriculars, their evening is already almost over if they want to get to bed at a decent time.
Not only does this limit the amount of extra time students have to spend with friends or family, it becomes exhausting. Having to work all day at school then come home and spend extra hours of their own time on homework is a lot and has an impact on their physical being.
The Stanford report also states how 56 percent of high school students have homework as a primary stressor. Anxiety has become a big issue for teenagers and homework is making that worse. When students go home they want to relax and chill out, especially after a long day at school. The last thing they want is to worry about more school work.
According to Berlin students, homework is a big part of their final grade and if not completed, it takes a toll on their class grades. A large portion of students at Berlin are student athletes and more and more are getting more involved when it comes to clubs and sports because that’s what colleges are looking for.
At the end of the day, students end up staying up late finishing homework because they don’t have time during the day. They know that if it doesn’t get completed it affects their grade and students today panic if they don’t have an A in a class.
If teachers here at Berlin try to get rid of most of their homework assignments, it will greatly benefit the students in the long run. Not only is it a win for students, less assignments means that teachers are spending less time grading those assignments and can use that time for something else.
