After a crazy election cycle, former President, and now President-elect, Donald Trump completed what is perhaps the greatest political comeback in our nation’s history as he defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to take the presidency.
The election cycle that preceded the actual election included two assassination attempts on Trump. Additionally, President Biden dropped out and endorsed Kamala Harris in July. The nation waited in eager anticipation on election night, as they awaited to see who the next President of the United States would be.
At 1:20 a.m. Fox News projected that Trump won the critical swing state of Pennsylvania and its 19 electoral votes which, after wins in Georgia and North Carolina, essentially made him President-elect.
Just one minute later, at 1:21 a.m., DecisionDeskHQ (DDHQ) also projected that Trump won Pennsylvania which, according to their projections, gave him the 270 electoral votes to become the next president, which made DDHQ the first to officially call the presidency.
The Associated Press (AP) would eventually concur at 5:34 a.m. and also project that Trump was President-elect.
Trump ended up with victories in all seven swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Trump also made several states more competitive including Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Virginia.
The final electoral college vote was 312-226 in favor of Trump. Trump also received the most votes of any Republican presidential candidate in history, as he received over 75 million votes.
Republicans gained control of the Senate and maintain control of the House of Representatives, which gives them control of all three branches of government for the first time since 2016.
