On Sunday, the Browns went into a major AFC North matchup without their quarterback Deshaun Watson, who has an achilles injury.
To fill in for Watson against their matchup against the AFC North’s top ranked Baltimore Ravens, the Browns tabbed the veteran backup Jameis Winston.
Winston made the best of his small opportunity, as he threw for 334 yards, and three touchdowns, to guide the Browns to a 29-24 upset victory over the Ravens, according to ESPN. Winston frequently teamed up with receiver Cedric Tillman, who received two touchdown passes. This includes the one that gave the Browns the lead with less than a minute left in the game.
In Winston’s first start as a quarterback since Sept. 25, 2022, many critics said he delivered what the Browns needed, after the team’s struggles with Deshaun Watson. Winston, who realized his moment, quoted Eminem in “Lose Yourself” in the post-game interview.
“[Eminem] said ‘you only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow, this opportunity lasts once in a lifetime,'” Winston said.
Winston’s strong performance was aided by his aggressiveness on the ball. While in the past, that aggressiveness has landed himself in trouble, especially in the interception category, the Browns got a few breaks, such as a Kyle Hamilton dropped interception, the play before the Browns’ game-winning touchdown. This moment was emblematic of Winston’s day, as a received a lot of breaks from the Raven’s subpar defensive day
Winston’s performance helped earn the start next week against the 4-3 Los Angeles Chargers, who the Browns will face next week.
