Taylor Swift announced her political takes on her Instagram shortly after the 2024 debate. The endorsement for Kamala Harris wasn’t a surprise to many powerful figures or fans because Swift often sides with the Democratic party and aligns with liberal views.
A pivotal moment in Swift’s career was the release of the Netflix film documentary, “Miss Americana.” The movie specifically reviews the moment in which Swift decided to publicly speak about politics for the first time.
Swift discussed on social media about her belief against Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn’s decision to deny the Violence Against Women Act because of the vagueness of the bill and how it included many people. The Violence Against Women Act was signed by former president, Bill Clinton, in 1994 to improve criminal justice response to sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking. The pop star urged Tennessee voters to vote for Democrat Phil Bredesen in the midterm elections in 2018.
“I live in Tennessee, I’m a Christian. That’s not what we stand for,” Swift said in the documentary, released in 2018.
Later in the film, Swift’s publicist warned her that Donald Trump could come after her. Swift could have cared less.
Fast forward to the night of Sept. 10, 2024, Swift began her Instagram post with the review of the AI deep-fake images that were made of her. The images showed Swift in a patriotic outfit and big words that said, “Taylor wants you to vote for Trump.” Swift shut this idea down, and admitted that she had made the choice to reserve her vote for Kamala Harris.
The endorsement had been anticipated from the Republican side, but Harris was a bit surprised. Her campaign crew was joyful to receive the endorsement, and felt more confidence with the election.
“Swift seems to always endorse a Democrat, and she’ll probably pay a price for it at the—in the marketplace. But, no, I like Brittany,” Trump said to USA today.
In a few interview questions, Trump referenced one of Swift’s best friends, Brittany Mahomes. Brittany is the wife of Chiefs player, Patrick Mahomes, and expressed her support for Trump. Despite their political differences, Swift and Brittany appear to have a sincere relationship.
Furthermore, it seemed that Swift had accomplished her mission. She drove about 338,000 Instagram users to the Vote.gov site to register to vote. Her post also got 10 million likes and 1.5 million shares.
“I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make,” Swift said.
