The Columbus Crew lifted their second trophy under Manager Wilfried Nancy as were crowned champions of the League’s Cup.
The Crew dominated their opposition, Los Angeles Football Club, for the third time in a row. Columbus’ star striker Cucho Hernandez led the team with an impressive two goals and one assist in the championship match. After an impressive tournament campaign, Hernandez also claimed the Leagues Cup MVP award.
Aside from Hernandez, Columbus also had multiple other contributors to the team’s success. Diego Rossi led the team with six total goals throughout the tournament. Rossi trailed Leagues Cup lead scorer, Tai Baribo from the Philadelphia Union, by only one goal. Rossi tallied an impressive six goals in five appearances.
With Columbus’ third cup final appearance and a Campeones Cup final on the horizon, its supporters have credited manager Wilfried Nancy with the team’s success. Nancy contributes the success to the team’s mindset and togetherness.
“It was about the way we wanted to play. It was about the day-to-day work. But the small steps that we’ve been putting in all the time, and we’re still doing, this is why I think that we, for the moment, we are a winning team,” Nancy said, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
Columbus looks to finish out its nine MLS regular season matches which includes a rivalry match against FC Cincinnati in the Hell is Real Derby. The Crew also host MLS leader, Inter Miami, on October 2nd.
