Olentangy hasn’t just removed Quizlet from the Portal; they have blocked the app in its entirety.
As part of the Quizlet user population at Berlin and in Olentangy more generally, I have relied on the app to study since 2017 when I was in sixth grade. My first quizlet was actually made by my science teacher to study the Scientific Method that year. I have commonly used “Learn” to build my knowledge of historical concepts, “Write” mode to memorize spellings in vocabulary quizzes, and “Test” to evaluate how prepared I am.
Over the years, I have created over thirty-five study sets which contain an overview of all AP U.S. History Midterm material in four Quizlets, a Quizlet on each individual AP Psychology unit, and miscellaneous study sets in AP Literature, AP Government, and various other subjects. It was my primary way to prepare for those assessments and caused me to not only succeed but also be confident in my ability to learn the material.
Even in the past year, when QuizletPlus was implemented, I’ve continued to use the app consistently. I went as far as to buy the extended application because of my reliance on the app.
Regardless, Olentangy removed the app from the Portal as well as blocked the app from being used. The decision was reasoned with the same explanation as with YouTube: the advertisements shown on the app could be unsuitable for the students’ eyes. In other words, ads on Quizlet could potentially be inappropriate.
The difference, however, between YouTube and Quizlet is that YouTube videos can still be uploaded on Schoology and reviewed by the district in order to allow students to access the content within school wifi. This does not apply to any Quizlets.
Personally, I have bought QuizletPlus through my school email account and this change has essentially blocked me access from my computer through accounts both logged in and seperate through my student ID. The only pathway I am able to access any study sets or create sets is through the app on my phone I downloaded beforehand. Therefore, for the sake of students who study Quizlet district-wide, I implore Olentangy to find a way for students to have access to their accounts in some sort of way.
