Rams pounce Mayfield
December 12, 2022
On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Rams claimed former Carolina Panther, Baker Mayfield as their starting quarterback, to fill currently injured Matthew Stafford’s role on the reigning Super Bowl Champions offense.
Mayfield was released by the Panthers earlier this week after he asked to be waived from the team. ESPN reported that it was likely he would be released in the near future, even if Mayfield had not prompted a release.
In July, Mayfield was traded to the Panthers from the Cleveland Browns, and in exchange for Mayfield, the Browns acquired a fourth-round draft pick in 2024.
Mayfield entered Carolina as the starting quarterback, where he accumulated a 1-4 record to begin the season. He suffered an ankle injury in week five, which put him out of the starting job, minus an appearance in week 11.
The Panthers spoke out on Monday, where they announced that Mayfield would be waived, and he and the franchise agreed it was time to move in a different direction.
According to ESPN, “He felt and we felt we wanted to give him the opportunity to seek whatever him and his agent felt was best for him…He has been nothing but a professional for us,” Panthers interim coach Steve Wilks said.
The Rams lost their starting quarterback Matthew Stafford earlier in the season to a spinal cord injury, and he is projected to be out for the rest of the season. The team has experienced the opposite of the success they saw last year, as they currently hold a 3-9 record and sit in the last place spot of the NFC West.
The team is hopeful about the acquisition of Mayfield, and they look forward to the talents he will bring to the team, as they are in need of a resurgence.
“He’s the type of guy, he’s gonna go out and compete his tail off. Glad to have him in the room, for sure,” Rams Offensive Coordinator Liam Coen said, according to the NFL.
Mayfield’s arrival to Los Angeles has piqued the interest of not just Rams fans, but most followers of professional football. His debut with the team will hopefully answer the question of what the rest of this season will look like for the reigning Super Bowl Champions.
