Curly-headed Bears care for their hair
October 27, 2022
It takes hard work and time to establish a routine that works to care for curly hair. Luckily, some fellow Bears have some tips and tricks that can help to quicken this process.
Avery Sexton ‘24 has a lot of experience with the configuration of her flawless curl routine. She’s found that her favorite brands of hair products are NYC Curls and Deva Curl, and her overall favorite product is the Deva Curl Plumping Primer.
Sexton spent over a year in trial and error with her hair, but finally found a routine that works. Her routine was perfected with the help of a curly hair specialist salon.
“When my hair is soaking wet, I apply a leave-in conditioner or the deva curl plumping primer but I flip my head upside down,” Sexton said. “I comb that through my hair with my hands and then soak up the extra water with a microfiber towel and then add a little bit of gel to hold my curls. [I] let the gel sit for a little then I diffuse my hair with my hair dryer with the diffuser attachment.”
Another Bear with a well-established hair routine is Landon Zabloudil ‘25. He washes his hair twice a week, but conditions it every day and even twice a day on school days. In the morning, he uses hair milk and Moroccan oil in his hair.
“My hair hasn’t been this long in a while so I’m still trying to make it better, but I’m always looking for new things to try,” Zabloudil said.
Jillian Miller ‘25 has some helpful recommendations for products as well. She’s a big fan of DevaCurl’s No-Poo cleanser, One Condition Original, and Wave Maker curl definer and defining gel.
“Most of the time it’s simply using the cleanser and conditioner in the shower, brushing my hair out before rinsing the conditioner out, and then using either a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt to dry my hair,” Miller said. “Afterwards, I finger-comb the definer and gel products through and scrunch the curls. I also recently started pinning up the front pieces with an alligator clip to help with volume. Most of the time I let it air dry, but if I have time, I diffuse.”
Some curl routines are much more simplistic than others. Maxwell Hoover ‘24 is able to achieve his curls with just a simple wash, condition, and dry.
It’s useful to acknowledge that everyone’s hair has different needs and with a bit of effort, it’s entirely achievable to figure out what works. Curls can be complicated and take time to manage, but it’s well worth it to establish a quality routine.
