After 70 years and 214 days of reign, Queen Elizabeth ll passed away on Sept. 8.

The History Channel says, at the late age of 96, Queen Elizabeth ll experienced normal health problems. Her medical team had advised her to miss multiple royal events such as the Jubilees Service of Thanksgiving. After she had missed a few more events, her team announced that she was under medical supervision.

As queen, Elizabeth II marked many milestones for the UK. According to The History Channel, Elizabeth’s coronation was the first to be televised, she was the first to walk through crowds, and she held the longest reign in history.

According to The Washington Post, as the news was broken to the public, broadcasters were instructed to wear black to symbolize the devastation of this loss. Flags across the country were lowered to half-mast and an alarm for national emergencies was sounded in offices. All students got 12 days off of school to mourn.

Monday, Sept. 19 marks the day she will be buried. She will be buried within the King George VI Memorial Chapel, The Independent said. The succession of the throne will go to Prince Charles, now King Charles lll. The country’s national anthem and currency will change to go along with the loss of Queen Elizabeth.
