This past weekend was filled with unlikely upsets with lots of back-and-forth games.
Penn State was off a loss to Big Ten rival Oregon, and traveled to UCLA, which was 0-4 and had not led at all this season.
UCLA’s offense showed up and rode behind Tennessee transfer Nico Iamaleava’s five touchdowns.
Penn State was ranked No. 2 in the preseason and No. 3 just two weeks ago. This was one of the most surprising upsets in college football history, and some analysts are calling it one of the worst losses of all time, according to Roger Sherman.
Penn State has dropped completely out of the AP Poll for the first time since 2022, the AP Poll being the ranking system for college football teams.
Miami traveled across Florida to play its rival, Florida State. Florida State was coming off a loss to fellow Atlantic Coastal Conference (ACC) opponent Virginia.
Miami opened up the game on fire and led 28-3 after the third quarter. To open up the fourth quarter, Florida State drove down the field to score a touchdown and the two-point conversion to get the game down to 17 points. The defense got a couple more stops to get Florida State’s offense the ball back, but it was not enough as the Hurricanes were able to pull out the win on the road.
Another ranked matchup went down in Tuscaloosa as the red-hot Alabama Crimson Tide faced undefeated Vanderbilt. Quarterback (QB) Diego Pavia has been on a hot streak ever since defeating the then top-ranked Crimson Tide a year ago.
Now Alabama QB Ty Simpson has been under fire ever since the opening week loss to Florida State, but has played well since Star receiver Ryan Williams had his best performance of the season against Wisconsin after a 165-yard, two-touchdown game.
The Crimson Tide rallied behind Ty Simpson’s 340-yard game, and the defense never let Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia get going. It was one of the best defensive performances of the year for Alabama, and it held Pavia to less than 200 yards and only one touchdown. Alabama won the game with ease, 30-14.
Ohio State came off a great week at Washington with yet another fantastic defensive performance. Julian Sayin led the way with another calm and collected game, also throwing a touchdown to Jeremiah Smith.
The Ohio State offense put up yet another great performance after Sayin launched two deep touchdown passes to Carnell Tate and Smith. The Buckeyes’ defense has held teams to an average of 5.5 points this season.
College football had a great week with plenty of upsets and top teams with dominant performances.
