As fall ends and the winter season comes around, students start to prepare for sports season tryouts. Here are some ways to set yourself up for success.
- During the offseason, many coaches hold pre-season lifts and practices. Especially as a freshman or if you are new to the sport, take the time to get to know the coaches and your teammates. This is the best way to make a good impression.
“One of the best ways I got to know my coaches was going to summer practices and lifting, you spend more time with the team and get to know everyone better,” Mena Gonzalez ‘28 said.
- Always put in effort. Effort is the best way to show your skills and prove you’re a team player, as well as exhibit good sportsmanship. Cheer on the team and keep your head up after a mistake.
- Academics play a huge role in the type of player you are. You can’t be a good athlete if you’re not a good student. School attendance isn’t the only thing you have to worry about, practice attendance is vital too. Grades count as well, these reports show the person you are and the effort you put forth. Join a club or extracurricular, all these things look good and catch coaches attention.
“When I leave for competitions I do my homework on the plane or car ride there, it really helps me stay on top of things,” Grace Bohaty ‘26 said.
- Find a balance between life and school. Practice 5+ days a week with games and school can be a challenge. Use your free time wisely and fit in work anytime you can. Remember that education should always come first. If you’re stuck on a long car ride to a game, bring some homework with you. “Doing three sports, friends, and school can be hard to balance, but I try to find a way to fit in my work, or take a mental health day here and there to reset. It’s not always bad,” Kelsey Grubbs ‘28 said.
- School spirit is important, Spirit days and participation around the school represent your program and the school.
- Be careful what you post on social media. What you share online is there forever, and coaches and administration can see your account. Posts that are unnecessary or inappropriate could get you suspended or even kicked off a team. Always remember you not only represent yourself, but the team program and Berlin.
If you keep these simple steps in mind, you’re on the way to a successful season. Find the balance in life, stay on top of academics, and be the best team player and athlete you can be.
