As the autumn season approaches, fall fashion trends continue to come and go. Whether it is the bell bottoms of the 70s, or oversized sweaters, it’s noticeable how much style has changed over the past five decades and the influence the past has on our wardrobes now.
The 70s were all about a mix of bohemian pieces and bold accessories. This era saw an incline of blunt oranges, mustard yellows, and browns which harmonize with the leaves’ change in colors. A staple to the newly changed weather look was the iconic bell-bottoms, normally paired with a pair of chunky shoes or knee-high leather boots. Women’s fashion was marked with loose dresses inspired by Stevie Nicks, which featured bright colors and floral patterns. Denim jackets, turtle necks, and fur-lined coats were also common amongst men and women throughout the era. Large pieces of jewelry were used to finish off the look. This era is thought to be about self expression and some chose to do so through their outfits.
“The fashion in the 70s was all about expression, and the clothing really reflects it. I absolutely adore the boho style clothing they would wear and I wish the style would make a comeback,” Maicy O’Donnell ‘28 said.
Fashion has taken a dramatic turn and today’s fall attire consists of more minimalistic and comfortable outfits. Even though the earth tones are still popularized in clothing, style has become more simplistic with comfortable cotton sweaters and oversized sweatshirts popularized. Some opt for neutral colored sweatpants or leggings to keep warm.
“I like to wear leggings when it gets chilly outside with my fluffy Uggs,” Marrisa Durkop ‘29 said.
Uggs have become a top choice for cold months, as they are lined with fuzz.
