The Olentangy Berlin Baseball program has taken leaps  since last season. Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshmen have a combined record of 29-15, and as of April 24, all have winning records. 

After what many would call a forgettable season last year, Varsity has got off to a 9-7 start, and Varsity Head Coach, Micheal Weaver is all in this year, and continues to find ways to improve and win games. Varsity Assistant, Max Gunn is on board as well, and has no doubt this team will continue to win. 

“ We can’t take our foot off the gas. This team has the ability to be great if they want to be,” Gunn said. 

This squad are firm believers in team chemistry, so actually everyone on the team bleached their hair, as it was said to bring everyone “closer”.

Junior Varsity has certainly picked up their game after a somewhat “rocky” start, and have worked their ways to an 11-3 record. JV Head Coach, Zac Brazen has only been a coach at Berlin for two years, but you would never know it with the way he leads the guys. 

“I’d say we have played very well so far, the boys have bought in and have begun to create more energy in the dugout, which will translate onto the field. We have fought adversity early in the season, which is always needed because we have to be able to respond to things like that if we want to continue to improve. We continue to grow as each day comes and goes and this team can greatly contribute to the program these next couple years,” Brazen said.

It is safe to say that he is fully confident in his squad, and feels that the future of the Berlin Baseball program is in safe hands. This team should look to continue to stay hot this season and continue to be successful.

Last but not least, the Freshmen Bears have got off to a good start of 9-5, and have pulled out a lot of hard fought victories. Even with 25 kids on the team, Head Coach Randy Smith has done a great job to give everyone a chance to get time in the field and continues to give his team the best chance to win. 

“We have a very large team this year which has been a lot of fun. We have been competing day in and day out in both games and practices to push each other to get better. No matter what happens in a game, whoever is starting or getting subbed in later, we play as one team and continue to work hard no matter the score. We have already had three extra inning games, and won two of them,” Smith said . 

Everyone on this team will consistently give their best, since a starting spot is on the line at all times. The future of the program is in good hands, and will continue to improve as they get older.

This season is off to a good start for the program, but time will tell if they’re really in it for the long run, as these next couple weeks are a true grind. All three levels have the talent to be great, it is just whether or not they put it all together truly.
